Obituary for Rita Ann Peterson

Rita Ann Peterson, age 84, a resident of rural Redfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018, at her home. She was born February 7, 1934, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Guy Fredrick Gravatt and Etta Lucille Soule Gravatt. She married Clifford Leroy Peterson on March 11, 1967. Rita had a passion for helping the underprivileged. She served on the board of directors for ECKAN in Garnett for forty-seven years and also helped distribute commodities from 1983-1993. Rita along with her husband, Clifford, enjoyed portraying Mr. and Mrs. Claus at area Christmas events. She was an active member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Newman, of Redfield, Kansas and Hope Collins, of Spavinaw, Oklahoma; two sons, Terry Newman, of Iola, Kansas and Jim Newman, of Baldwin City, Kansas and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Carl Gravatt, of Hughesville, Missouri and a sister, Valerie Mitchell, of Culpepper, Virginia. Her husband, Clifford, preceded her in death on April 6, 2013. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Spencer Newman and Robert Peterson, Sr. and a daughter, Lucille Newman.

There was cremation. Rev. Marty Dewitt will conduct a memorial service at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 14th at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown. Memorials are suggested to the First Missionary Baptist Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.
