Obituary for Doris Irene Jones

Doris Irene Jones, age 101, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Friday, July 27, 2018, at Guest Home Estates, Ft. Scott. She was born January 30, 1917, in Rockville, MO, the daughter of Isreal and Nancy Emmaline White DeLozier. Her family moved to Fort Scott when she was a child, and that move marked the beginning of her 95 years as a proud member of the Fort Scott community. She married Howard Jones on September 6, 1933, and together they had two children, Marilyn and Larry. They remained married until Howard’s death in 1983. Doris left, in the wake of her passing, a legacy for which her entire family will forever be grateful.

A gifted, largely self-taught musician, Doris began playing funeral services for the Cheney Memorial Chapel when she was just sixteen years old. Continuing with her love of music, she taught piano to countless pupils, played piano for the Fort Scott Rotary Club for half a century and for the Kiwanis Club almost as long, served as an accompanist for thousands of funerals, weddings, and community activities, and earned a place as a fixture in her beloved Fort Scott. Doris became a devoted member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle in 1960, and was honored to be the church pianist, then organist, for almost thirty years. She continued to play piano until she was nearly a hundred, often accompanying the church groups that provided worship services to the residents of Guest Home Estates, where she lived the last few years of her life.

Doris was a truly remarkable woman. Following Howard’s diagnosis of lung cancer at forty-five years of age, Doris graciously supported her family, armed with a selfless willingness and determination to embrace whatever was necessary to provide for her family. Decades later she successfully survived her own battle with breast cancer. She was truly relentless. She possessed an inspirational faith and an indomitable spirit - a spirit that made all 4’11” of her seem larger than life! And her sweet spirit, which she freely shared, captured the hearts of many over the course of her well-lived life. She was loved beyond words and loved back with an unbridled enthusiasm.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard Jones, and older sister, Clayta Runnels. She is survived by her children, Marilyn Fluty and her husband Delbert, of Overland Park, Kansas, and Larry Jones and his wife Leah, also of Overland Park. Also surviving are three grandsons, Steven Fluty, Phillip Fluty, and Matthew Jones. Doris is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Larry Jones and Pastor Paul Rooks will conduct funeral services at 2:00 PM Thursday, August 2nd, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle, Ft. Scott. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until service time Thursday, at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Grace Baptist Music Department and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, 201 S. Main, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.
