Orville Ray Scharenberg, age 92, a long time resident of Mapleton, Kansas, died Friday, July 27th at the Prescott Country View Nursing Home in Prescott. He was born August 23, 1919, in Marion, Kansas, the son of Joe Scharenberg and Fay Selvy Scharenberg. He married Mary Anna Goertz on June 15, 1941, in Marion, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2005. The couple moved from Marion to their farm near Mapleton in 1959. They operated their own dairy farm as well as owning and operating a laundry and dry cleaning business in Mapleton for many years. Orville was a member of the Xenia Baptist Church. He was active in the funnel cake business and enjoyed working with his family with this hobby. He was known for his playing of the harmonica and bones.
Survivors include two sons, David Scharenberg and wife Linda, Mapleton, Fred Scharenberg and wife Lori, Raytown, Missouri; two daughters, Mary Fay Lalman and husband Jerry, Mapleton, and Leta Hale and husband Jim, Hollister, Missouri; and one daughter-in-law, Debbie Scharenberg, Mapleton. Also surviving is a sister, Fern Jost of Nebraska, his caregiver prior to moving to the nursing home, Betty Roberts; 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Mark Scharenberg; two granddaughters, Jeri Lynn Lalman and Reesa Lalman Smith; a great-grandson Drew Koenck; two sisters Oleta Scharenberg and Lois Jost; and a brother Leo Scharenberg.
Bro. Vernon Lindbloom and Bro. Aaron Scharenberg will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Friday in the Xenia Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Mapleton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to either the Xenia Baptist Church or the Country View Nursing Home and may be sent to the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kansas.
