Eva E. Freeman, age 84, a former resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, and more recently of Loveland, Colorado, passed away Friday, July 6, 2012, in Loveland. She was born February 3, 1928, the daughter of Leslie E. and Olive Winifred King Turner. She was born in Woods County, Oklahoma in the same house, same bedroom but different corners that her mother was born in. Eva grew up in Redfield, Kansas until her family moved to La Junta, Colorado where her father owned a mechanic shop and her mother ran a small grocery store. While she was in her first year at college, she met her husband, Walter H. Freeman. Walter and Eva were married June 3, 1947. Walter was in the Navy for twenty years and the couple moved coast to coast for his career. Eva worked occasionally but her biggest job was raising their three daughters. After Walter retired from the Navy, the family moved back to La Junta. Eva started back to work doing bookkeeping and accounts receivable for J. C. Newberry. Walter became involved in retail with Montgomery Wards. After receiving training on managing a store, Eva and Walt bought a catalogue agency in Vernal, Utah. They moved their family there and had the business for eight years. They were very successful with the store and had to buy a bigger building to handle the customers. After they sold the business, Eva went back to work as an accounts payable clerk at a car dealership. Eva was offered a job to work as a secretary for the Uintah School District in the bus garage. Eva was the transportation secretary for nineteen years. Eva was a very thoughtful person always making birthday cakes for the bus drivers. She would take her work home with her drawing the new routes at the beginning of the school year. While there, she received the Secretary of the Year for the State of Utah in 1991. After Eva retired she and Walt moved to Fort Scott, Kansas. They were married for fifty-six years when Walt passed away. Eva was active in her childhood church in Redfield acting as church treasurer. After Walt passed away, Eva moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and lived with her eldest daughter, Barbara Jo “Bobbi” until she unexpectedly passed away. Eva then moved in with her youngest daughter, Eva Lynn in Colorado.

Eva is survived by her daughter, Eva Lynn Rettig and husband, Larry; son-in-law, Leslie Smith, grandsons, Leslie Smith, Walter Smith, granddaughter, Rhiannon Rae and her husband, Corey Reynolds; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kayden, Trinity and Alyssa and a brother, Ben Turner. Eva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter, brother, Leroy Turner, sister, Barbara Winn, daughters, Barbara Jo Smith and Winnie Beatrice Hendricks and grandson, Paul Hendricks.

Rev. Joel Dunn will conduct funeral services at 1:30 P.M. Friday, July 13th at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 P.M. until service time on Friday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Services are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, Kansas.
