Jim Powell, age 83, a resident of rural Fort Scott, died Monday, May 14, 2012, at the Guest Home Estates following a cancer illness. He was born September 13, 1928, in Mapleton, Kansas, the son of James Powell, Sr. and Carrie Schmitz Powell. He married Hazel L. Lovell on June 5, 1954, at Fort Scott. She preceded him in death on July 20, 2004. In his earlier years, Jim worked as a painter. He later was employed by the U. S. National Cemetery from 1969 to 1988. Following his retirement from the National Cemetery, he operated his own farm.

Survivors include his son, Steve Powell, of Fort Scott and a sister, Emma Jean Winship of Kansas City, Missouri. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, David Alan Powell and a sister, Janie Mae Ballah.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 16th at the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel from 1:00 P.M. until leaving for the cemetery at 1:45 P.M. Memorials are suggested to the Sharing Bucket or the Ft. Scott Animal Shelter and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.
