LeRoy “Punk” Mayfield, age 62, a resident of Fort Scott, died early Thursday, March 18, 2010, at the Freeman Health System in Joplin Missouri following a brief heart ailment. He was born February 29, 1948, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Bill Lee Mayfield and Cleta Irene Norbury Mayfield. He was graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1966 and later, in 1970, from Fort Scott Community College. He married Shirlee McGinnis on November 7, 1969, at Fort Scott, Kansas. LeRoy worked for Cheney’s Funeral Chapel for many years. He also worked as an underwriter for the Western, American States and later Safeco Insurance Companies. At the time of his death, he was working part-time for Geneva & Son Monument Company. He was a member of the Paint Creek Church of the Brethren. LeRoy was a regular blood donor. He was twice chosen as Commercial Lines Underwriter of the Year by agencies across Kansas. LeRoy bowled for the Western Insurance team, coached youth baseball, and spent many hours driving FSHS students to and from debate and forensics tournaments. LeRoy never met a stranger.
Survivors include his wife, Shirlee, of the home; a daughter, Raquel “Rocky” Beltz and husband, James, Pleasanton, Kansas; a brother, Jay Mayfield and wife, Mauritta, Richards, Missouri; and two sisters, Cleta Dell’Antonia, Ft. Scott, Kansas, and Mary Cullor and husband, Jim, Woodland, California. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Johnathon Gray, James Beltz II, Jacob Beltz, and Jacqueline Beltz; several nieces and nephews and one God son. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill Mayfield, his step-fathers, Joe George and Andy Streeter and two step-brothers, Delbert and Jack George.
Pastor Joe White will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 22, 2010, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.
