Virginia May Allen, age 91, a former resident of the Highrise Apartments, Fort Scott, died Wednesday, July 01, 2009, at Medicalodge of Fort Scott. She was born September 17, 1917, in Billings, Missouri, the daughter of Clyde Phillips and Jennie Kelley Phillips, and has been a resident of Fort Scott nearly all her adult life. Virginia taught cosmetology at Fort Scott Community College for a short while and owned her own beauty shop for many years. She also was employed for a period at the Western Insurance Company in the accounting department. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was first married to Hubert R. Stanley. They later divorced. She married Robert E. Lee Parsons. He preceded her in death. She married Ernest Marvin Allen on October 31, 1979. He preceded her in death on September 14, 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Dalton and husband Ed, Olathe, Kansas; and three grandchildren, Suzanne Hughes, Brenda Douglas, and Greg Dalton. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and a special friend, John Skiles. She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Penny Wicken, two brothers, Louis Bunn and Thomas Phillips; and three sisters, Eva York, Evelyn Lawing and infant, Maxine Phillips.
Rev. Paul Babcock will conduct graveside services for Virginia May Allen at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 3, 2009, at the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:00 A.M. until leaving for the cemetery at 9:45 A.M. in the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott.
